How to Build an iOS App
The steps from idea to App Store, and the decisions you make along the way.
To build an iOS app you define what the app must do, design the key screens, build it with Swift (native) or Flutter (cross-platform), connect it to a backend if it needs accounts or shared data, test it on real devices with TestFlight, and submit it for App Store review under an Apple Developer account.
- An Apple Developer account costs $99 a year and is required to publish.
- Flutter lets the same code later ship to Android.
- App Store review usually takes one to three days.
Step 1: Define the core feature
Write down who the app is for and the one thing it must do well. Everything else can come in later versions.
Step 2: Design the key screens
Sketch the main flows, then design them following Apple's Human Interface Guidelines so the app feels familiar to iPhone users.
Step 3: Choose Swift or Flutter
Swift gives full access to every iOS feature. Flutter builds iOS and Android from one codebase. Our Macro Tracker and Transactions Management App are both Flutter apps released for iOS.
Step 4: Build the backend
If users sign in, sync data or pay, the app needs a server, database and usually an admin panel.
Step 5: Test and publish
Distribute test builds with TestFlight, fix issues found on real devices, prepare screenshots and a store listing, then submit for review.
